An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure typically performed by an endodontist to remove an infected root tip of a tooth that already had root canal therapy. It is often recommended when traditional root canal therapy is not sufficient to address the infection fully, or an access to initiate Root Canal Retreatment is not possible due to a presence of a post or a separated instrument in a canal.
An apicoectomy is performed under a local anesthesia and typically takes around an hour to complete. The procedure involves curettage of the infected or inflamed tissue surrounding the root, followed by placement of a medicated cement to seal it. The sutures are placed for about a week.
